Custom vs. Ready-Made Engagement Rings: How to Choose

Neither is better in the abstract — they solve different problems. Here's a clear-eyed look at the trade-offs so you can pick the right path for your situation.

The real differences

Ready-made means choosing an existing design, sometimes with a swappable centre stone. Custom means the design is built around your idea from the start. The practical differences come down to four things: how closely it matches your vision, how long it takes, how the price is structured, and whether you can change it along the way.

When ready-made is the right call

If your timeline is short, if you've found an existing design you genuinely love, or if decision-making feels overwhelming and you'd rather choose from curated options — ready-made is a perfectly good answer. There's no prize for going custom when a stock design already says what you want it to say.

When custom is worth it

Custom earns its place when you have a specific vision that off-the-shelf pieces keep almost — but not quite — matching, when you're setting an heirloom stone, when you need an unusual size or proportion, or when being involved in the design is part of the meaning for you.

The price myth

Custom is not automatically more expensive. Because a custom piece skips retail markup and showroom overhead, a custom solitaire and a comparable retail one often land close together. Custom gets expensive when you add complexity — not simply because it's custom.

The timeline reality

Ready-made can be days, especially if no resizing is needed. Custom takes longer because there's a design phase: at Beto, a 3D CAD render within about 48 hours of design approval, then roughly 2 weeks (3 weeks in platinum) to make an engagement ring, or 2–4 weeks for something complex. If you're proposing next week, that math matters.

The hybrid path

Semi-custom sits in between: start from an existing setting design and modify it — change the metal, adjust the band width, swap the centre stone, add an engraving. You get meaningful personalization without a full design cycle, often with a shorter timeline and a more predictable price.
