The Culture Behind Grillz: From Hip-Hop Roots to Custom Luxury

Grillz aren't a trend — they're a lineage. Here's where the culture came from, and how custom grillz have evolved into serious fine jewelry.

Roots in Southern hip-hop

Grillz trace back decades, but it was the Southern hip-hop scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s — Houston, Atlanta, Memphis — that pushed them into mainstream visibility. Artists wore them as a statement of individuality and success, turning a dental accessory into a genuine art form.

From novelty to craft

Early grillz were often mass-produced. As demand grew, so did the craftsmanship — today's grillz are built the same way fine jewelry is: a precise mold of your teeth, hand-fabricated in real gold, and set with real diamonds if you choose. It's a completely different category from the cheap clip-on versions sold at costume shops.

A permanent piece, worn temporarily

Custom grillz are removable, made specifically to your dental impression so they fit precisely — not the generic one-size pieces that don't sit right against your teeth. Fit is what separates a genuine custom piece from a costume.

Beyond hip-hop

What started in one music scene has become a broader statement piece worn across music genres, fashion, and simply as personal style — the culture opened the door, but grillz today are for anyone who wants a bold, wearable piece of gold and diamond craftsmanship.

What custom grillz cost

Pricing depends on metal, coverage (single tooth to full mouth, top and bottom), and whether you add diamonds. A simple gold open-face piece starts modestly; a fully iced-out set with VS-clarity diamonds is a serious investment — and priced accordingly, the same way any fine jewelry piece is.

How the process works

We start with a dental impression — either in person at our Montreal studio or via an at-home kit we walk you through — then design your piece in 3D before any metal is cast. You approve the design before production starts, exactly like our engagement ring process.
