Buying Guide
Chain Store, Independent Jeweller, or Online: Where to Buy an Engagement Ring in Montréal
Three ways to buy, each with real strengths and real trade-offs. Here's how to compare them honestly for an engagement ring specifically.

Chain and mall jewellers
Strengths: you can walk in today, financing is usually available on the spot, and a familiar brand name is reassuring when you're nervous. Trade-offs: prices carry retail and brand markup, deep customization is limited, and the person helping you often isn't the person who makes or repairs the ring.
Independent goldsmith or atelier
Strengths: you deal directly with the maker, customization is the default rather than an upcharge, and without showroom overhead the value per dollar is usually better. Trade-offs: you typically need an appointment, there's less finished stock to try on, and you're trusting one person's reputation rather than a chain's return policy.
Online-only retailers
Strengths: the widest stone selection and often the lowest headline prices, with useful configurator tools. Trade-offs: you can't see the actual stone or try the setting before it ships, sizing and returns are done by mail, and there's no local person to go back to for adjustments or repairs.
How to compare a quote fairly across all three
Line the quotes up on the same terms: exact carat, cut, colour and clarity of the centre stone; the certifying lab; metal and purity; whether sizing, certification and an insurance appraisal are included; and any fees that appear after design approval. A cheap headline price with three add-ons is not cheap.
What matters most for an engagement ring specifically
An engagement ring is worn every day for decades and usually needs at least one service in that time — a re-tip, a resize, a re-polish. Whoever you buy from, it helps to know who does that work and how reachable they are. This is where a local maker has a structural advantage over a website.
Where Beto fits
Beto Jewelry is an independent goldsmith's atelier in Montréal — you design directly with Rayane, in person or by video anywhere in Canada, and he makes and stands behind the ring himself. It's the independent-atelier model above, with virtual access for clients who aren't in the city.
